Women Shopping Series
In 1987 everyone was shopping in San Francisco. Women in their high heels were striding with determination. This series began with some small pastel studies, and I went on to paint over 25 Women Shopping oil paintings. My first canvases looked like Samurai warriors. These shoppers were looking for something, but would this “retail therapy” fulfill their emotional needs? Contemporary art was ready for this series. I began my Women Shopping Drawings after I discovered oil stick bars. Drawing with oil sticks is like drawing with lipstick. I drew panel after panel of rich, black shoppers on rag paper. There is no erasing with this additive drawing method. If you go too far with a drawing, it is ruined. The single panels soon evolved into diptychs and triptychs.
